Dangerous

Oh, oh, dangerous, they told us it was dangerous

Bad enough to turn your brain to mush, so

You’d never better touch the stuff

But on the day I turned eighteen

In the arms of a beauty queen

I was keen to see what would happen if we fired one up

Smoke a joint, get laid (Smoke a joint, get laid)

Smoke a joint, get laid (Smoke a joint, get laid)

I shall never forget my eighteenth birthday

Oh, oh, dangerous, that’s what they told us growing up

They said we never would amount to much, if

We started toking up that stuff

But when I wrote this here hit song

I was hitting on a big-ass bong

Man, I was Onward Through The Fog to the big-ass bucks

Smoke a joint, have a hit (Smoke a joint, have a hit)

Smoke a joint, have a hit (Smoke a joint, have a hit)

It sounds to me like that’s one huge-ass benefit (Huh?)

Smoke a joint, have a hit (Smoke a joint, have a hit)

Smoke a joint, have a hit (Smoke a joint, have a hit)

And furthermore what we were told was all bullshit

Now, technically it’s criminal, but I prefer to call it whimsical

The way the magic is so musical and the side effects are minimal

Oh, oh, dangerous, they labeled it as dangerous

Oh sure, they let us go get liquored up, but

Boy, you’re busted if you puff that stuff

Now as the decades pass me by

With a wink in the blink of an eye

I wonder still, brother, will I ever get enough

Smoke a joint, eat a pie (Smoke a joint, eat a pie)

Eat a whole damn pie (Eat a whole damn pie)

Ain’t nothing wrong with that as long as you don’t die from eating pie

Smoke a joint, sing a song (Smoke a joint, sing a song)

Smoke a joint, sing a song (Smoke a joint, sing a song)

It’s only dangerous when other people sing along

Smoke a joint, sing a song (Smoke a joint, sing a song)

Smoke a joint, sing a song (Smoke a joint, sing a song)

It’s only dangerous when other people sing along

NOTES ON THIS SONG
Willie and his entourage had just gotten busted in Louisiana. The absurdity of the event struck me as a reason to make some social commentary. Fortunately, a humorous piece came out of the proselytizing. Every single place I have played this song it has received a very special reception. That’s important to me, that the songs are able to shake themselves free of my limitations and touch an audience. Time to alter the rules America.
