Sunflower

I’m a sunflower on the side of the road

Flip-flopping and blowing with the wind

A yellow sunflower on the side of the road

Making everybody driving by me grin

Oh, ho-ho-ho, oh, ha-ha-ha

I’m making everybody driving by me grin

Oh, ho-ho-ho, oh, tra-la-la

It’s like the whole world driving by me is my friend

I’m a sunflower on the side of the road

Solar power is nothing new to me

I’m a sunny sunflower on the side of the road

Re-radiating all that solar energy (Here we go)

Oh, ho-ho-ho, oh, ha-ha-ha

I’m making everybody driving by me grin

Oh, ho-ho-ho, oh, tra-la-la

I’ve got the power of the sun flowing in my stem, now

I would run like a gazelle, if I had legs, and

I would soar like a mourning dove, if I had wings

But what one sunflower can do

I am doing here for you

Have you never heard a flower who could sing? (Well, that’s my thing)

I’m a sunflower on the side of the road

Harmonizing with the songbirds and the bees

I’m a singer/sunflower on the side of the road

And every song I sing, by gum, is a jamboree (Y’all sing along)

Oh, ho-ho-ho, oh, ha-ha-ha

I’m making everybody driving by me grin

Oh, ho-ho-ho, oh, tra-la-la

It’s like the whole world driving by me is my friend (Let’s do it again)

Oh, ho-ho-ho, oh, ha-ha-ha

I’m making everybody driving by me grin (See you later, friend)

Oh, ho-ho-ho, oh, tra-la-la

I’ve got some powerful good fun flowing in my stem

NOTES ON THIS SONG
An outburst of sunflowers after a rainy spring in Austin was the inspiration for this song. I had never seen such a display of yellow petals against a sea of green leaves and stems. Every time I would drive by a vacant lot blossoming with the spring flowers, I would grin and think to myself, “I could be a sunflower.”
