No Matter What I Do

If I were the guy who had eyes for you

I would resort to subterfuge to seduce you

I would produce a Broadway play

I’d sing and dance like Danny Kaye

So I could star opposite you, the leading lady

No matter what I do, no matter what I do

You could always count on me to see it through

No matter what I do, no matter what I were to do

You could always count on me to see it through

If I were the guy who had eyes for you

Say you were going to make a move, well I could help you

I could lift the heavy things

Help you hang your angel wings

And even vacuum all the cobwebs from the corners

No matter what I do, no matter what I do

You could count on me to get it done for you

No matter what I do, no matter what I were to do

You could always count on me to see it through

That’s the kind of guy I am

I’m not so hard to understand

I’m pretty good at sticking to a plan

No matter what I do to lend a hand

If I were the guy who had eyes for you

I would use youthful derring-do to impress you

But you could also bet on me

To be that dude at ninety three

Who’s just as eager, then as now, to help dress you

No matter what I do, no matter what I do

You could always count on me to see it through

No matter what I do, no matter what I were to do

You could always count on me to see it through

You could always count on me to be with you

You could always count on me to do for you

NOTES ON THIS SONG
I don’t know where the idea for the song came from, but it was clear pretty early on that I was writing a song about my dad and his devotion to my mother. Neither would have much luck reading this Web site now, and I doubt either would really get the message behind the song. There was never music in their house. Daddy is a loyal Leo, a good husband and a gentle man. I hope the song represents him in a way that would make him proud.
