The War Is Done

It’s too late for ultimatums and for dishing out demands

Or for issuing conditions like you own the master plan

Please stop talking like some lawyer in that pseudo-legalese

We are dying here and dearly need a way to make the peace

Put down the gun, recall the bombs, the war is done, the war is done

I can’t sleep, I’m barely eating, ‘round the clock my stomach churns

I’ve been burnt and I’ve been beaten by our love at every turn

Please forgive me for my failures and these feeble poetries

As I rummage through what’s left for a way to make the peace

Put down the gun, recall the bombs, the war is done, the war is done

I will disappear with the smoke hanging in the air

Not a trace of me will linger anywhere

The war is done and you have earned your victory fair

The war is done now I will vanish into air

There’ll be no negotiations, just surrender, no goodbye

And I won’t wonder what you’re feeling, ’cause I can see it in your eyes

Please remember me for loving you, even down her on my knees

In this final act of love I pray to God you find the peace

Put down the gun, recall the bombs, the war is done, the war is done

You win

NOTES ON THIS SONG
I’ve had too many break-ups in my life to want to count. This story is about one them, the names, of course, being withheld to protect everybody. For what it’s worth, I did not want this break-up to happen. I would have done anything she asked to try to salvage the relationship. I think I would still, lo these many years later. Mardi Wareham does background vocals.
