At the Old Quarter Acoustic Café in Galveston, Texas — October 2007 |
REX (WRECKS) BELL |
The legendary Rex (Wrecks) Bell |
I started my pilgrimage through Texas’ open mics four years ago right here on Rex Bell’s stage. I have not been kicked off any stage, yet, and I’ve only been booed once. I can’t thank Rex enough for letting me cut my teeth in his place. He has a résumé that includes a ton of world-famous musicians, but the one he has decorated the Acoustic Café with is Townes Van Zandt. The annual Townes Van Zandt Wake is held every January 1st at the Old Quarter Acoustic Café. To get onstage you have to play a Townes tune. The walls are papered with Townes memorabilia. If you’re a musician and you’re wandering into Galveston unannounced, find the Acoustic Café and visit with Rex. Wednesdays are always open mics. Thursdays are usually open mics, unless there’s a special guest that night. Fridays and Saturdays, Rex features some of the most talented and renowned performers in the state of Texas. Awesome sound system for such a small place. Right around the corner from the 1894 Grand Opera House.
