Patty in the Band

She’s the kind of girl who likes it in the back

Safe behind sunglasses while she’s picking on an ax

While her old man’s out there jamming in front of 100,000 fans

She’s the beauty in the background, she’s the Patty in the band

In her basic black and pearls and embroidered leather jeans

Like a model on a runway she starts swinging everything

And her hair flashes like lightning while the sparks fly from her hands

She’s electric in the background, she’s the Patty in the band

And she’s right where she wants to be

She’s making music into history, ‘cause

This is just what she had planned, she’s the Patty in the band

Out there on the circuit, seems like every place we go

She’s the number one attraction, she’s the star of every show

It’s her act they love the most, she always draws the biggest hand

When she treats ‘em to a solo from the Patty in the band

And she’s right where she wants to be

She’s turning music into destiny, ‘cause

This is just what she had planned, she’s the Patty in the band

This is her life, read the plan, she’s the Patty in the band

No one ever thought about it, there was never doubt about it

It was always understood that she would be the Patty in the band

She’s the kind of girl who knows you’re going to cry

When the music’s finally over and she has to say goodbye

But she’ll treat you, oh, so gently, she is such the tender hand

She’s my best friend in the background, she’s the Patty in the band

And she’s right where she wants to be

She’s cutting up on the stage with me

This is just what she had planned, she’s the Patty in the band

She’s my girl, I’m her old man, and she’s the Patty in the band

One more time, now, a great big hand

Give it up how much you love the Patty in the band

NOTES ON THIS SONG
This song is not about a girl named Patty. This is a song about a woman who fantasized about doing something with her life, then went after it. The inspiration for this song appears elsewhere in this collection, though she never pursued her fantasy of being in a band. Patty Scialfa is the artist that she would emulate if she were to abandon her hugely successful career in business. I’m sure Bruce Springsteen has some little role in this fantasy.
