Bonfire Beach

I took her dancing down on Bonfire Beach

Back of Nash’s Bait Camp where the old men meet

I took her down the island where they still get by

On the crabs that they catch and the fish that they fry

We fell in love, we did, on Bonfire Beach

Where the wind blows hard and the sand gets in your teeth

Where the ships drop anchor on the Bolivar Roads

Waiting for another little ship to come lighter their loads

I took her dancing down on Bonfire Beach

Me and Nancy dirty dancing cheek-to-cheek

Me and Nancy dancing till the sun came up

Down on Bonfire Beach, where we fell in love

Down on Bonfire Beach, down on Bonfire Beach

She had been elected our homecoming queen

I was a co-captain of the football team

We were building bonfires, we were cheering cheers

Celebrating falling in love in that championship year

I took her dancing down on Bonfire Beach

Me and Nancy dirty dancing cheek-to-cheek

Me and Nancy dancing till the sun came up

Down on Bonfire Beach, where we fell in love

Down on Bonfire Beach, down on Bonfire Beach

But that was oh, so long ago

So very many moons ago

Young kids race down here searching for their thrills

They race their hot rods down from Cherry Hill

But me and Nancy we stick to the sand

Where the waves come thundering in, me and my Nancy dance

I take her dancing down on Bonfire Beach

We still go dancing down on Bonfire Beach

Me and Nancy dancing where the sun comes up

Down on Bonfire Beach, we renew our love

Down on Bonfire Beach, down on Bonfire Beach

NOTES ON THIS SONG
This is the first song I got a publishing contract on, but nothing ever came of it. Bonfire Beach is really a beach park in Galveston named Apffel Park, and commonly known as East Beach. Bonfire Beach is made up. The Nancy name is to salute all the women named Nancy who have befriended me over the years. Finally, thanks to my buddy, Pete Fredriksen, for encouraging not only this song, but all the songs I’ve ever written. He was there when this one was born.
