That Empty Chair

That empty chair sitting next to you

Did you put it there to tease me

Just to see what I would do

Would I take the dare

Would I sit down next to you

In that empty chair

That empty chair, it could change our lives

I could sit down next to you

Next thing you know

We might decide that we’re in love

If I sit down next to you

In that empty chair

Help me out here, Jimmie

The only thing between the two of them and love

The single thing between the two of them and love

All he can see between the two of them and love

Is that empty chair

Over there by the girl with the curly golden hair

That empty chair that you’re leaning on

It makes me jealous ‘cause I’m not the one

Your arms are keeping warm

But I won’t despair

I won’t be scared out of my love

By that empty chair

Let’s tell ‘em again, Jimmie

The only thing between the two of them and love

The single thing between the two of them and love

All he can see between the two of them and love

Is that empty chair

Over there by the girl with the golden curls in her hair

Yeah, that one, there

And that empty chair’s the perfect ending for this song

That empty chair where you were sitting

It’s still warm, sitting next to me

That empty chair

That empty chair

NOTES ON THIS SONG
This song is an example of a song that was written as the direct result of having attended a seminar/workshop about songwriting. I wrote this one within a few days of the 2007 Austin Songwriters Group Symposium. I can’t stress enough how important, if you’re a songwriter, such events are. Most of us attend seeking publishing contracts. Experience tells me that rarely happens. So, I go looking for a new song. Rarely am I disappointed.
