Wednesday Night at Gino’s

Wednesday night at Gino’s, we know lotsa Austin walking in the door

(Hey y’all! Hey man! Hey doll!)

Most likely we have heard ‘em play or even been up on the stage with a few before

(I jammed with you! I played then, too! Oh yeah, me too!)

Welcome to Wednesday night at Gino’s time to open up the microphone once more

Just call up Marvin around noon, work up two or three good tunes

Then come show Austin what you got that guitar for

Come and show ‘em why you’ve chosen to be poor

Wednesday night at Gino’s, Do you know who is that darkening the door?

(Tall and thin, great big grin)

Why that’s ole Rusty Weir been gigging here since LBJ was taking us to war

(Probably before)

And after 40 years he still comes here to show us rookies how to strike a chord

(Thank you, Rusty) at

Gino’s Italian Grill (South Austin), Gino’s Italian Grill (West Stassney)

Gino’s Italian Grill (Call Marvin), Gino’s Italian Grill

Wednesday night at Gino’s, who knows who you might know up here picking tunes

(Who knows? That’s right, who knows?)

Could be a Willie, could be Sheryl, could be some ex-girlfriend telling your old news

(Hoo-hoo! Hoo-hoo! Who? Who?)

No matter who you hear at Gino’s, here at Gino’s we all sing in the dining room

Just call up Marvin around noon, pick your two or three best tunes

Then come show Austin what you got that guitar for

Come and show ‘em why you won’t mind being poor, anymore

Just as long as Gino’s lets you in the door, at

Gino’s Italian Grill (South Austin), Gino’s Italian Grill (West Stassney)

Gino’s Italian Grill (Call Marvin), Gino’s Italian Grill

Wednesday night at Gino’s, who knows who might be the next emerging star

(It could be you! Oh no, it’s you!)

Oh and don’t forget to tip your waitresses and tip that chick behind the bar

(Jingaling, jingaling, jingaling that jar)

And tip the cooks back in the kitchen, tip ole Marvin, tip that kid who parked my car

(She’s got it going! She’s going good! She could go far!)

‘Cause just like me they’re glad to be here working Gino’s, working Austin, working hard

(Hardly hard)

Welcome to Wednesday night at Gino’s, we got Austin hanging all over the bar

(Hang on y’all, don’t nobody fall)

Welcome to Wednesday night at Gino’s, we got Austin walking in and out the door

(Two, three, four)

NOTES ON THIS SONG
When I moved to Austin, this restaurant/nightclub offered one of the legendary open mics every Wednesday night, attended by none other than the renowned Rusty Weir. As with so many open mics, this one disappeared. I love the song, though. The charm of the song reflects all of the really cool people I met there. I met Florina Ruxandra there. Jannie Ernst and Mardi Wareham helped me out with background vocals.
